3、interestinaVARsystem.TheempiricalresearchusingthismethodinthecaseofChinaislimited，thestudythereforeprovidesaninterestingadvanceintheliteratureontheeconomicsofFDIinChina.INTRODUCTIONThelinkagebetweenFDIandeconomicgrowth,togetherwiththestudyonthedeterminantsofFDI,h
4、asbeenthesubjectofconsiderableresearchformanydecades.Againstthisbackground,thereisagrowingbodyoftheFDIstudiesusingthecaseofChina.Sincetheearly1990s,ChinahasbecomethesecondlargesthostcountryforFDI.During1980±1995,theannualgrowthrateofutilizedFDIwas40%,andaccompani
5、edwiththispersistentstrongFDIinflow,Chinahasachievedaremarkableeconomicgrowthrate.Despitesomedevelopmentsinthetheoreticalfront,morestudieshavebeendevotedtotheempiricalliteratureonFDIandthisstudyattemptstoaddtotheempiricalliteraturebyexaminingtheimpactsofFDIontheC
6、hineseeconomy,includingananalysisofthedeterminantsofFDI.TwodevelopmentsintheempiricalliteratureofFDIhavesignificantimplicationsfordiscussingtheeconomicsofFDIinChina:first,previouseconometricstudiesbasedontheassumptionthatthereisone-waycausalityfromFDItoGDPgrowthh
7、asbeennotedandcriticizedinmorerecentstudies(see,e.g.Kholdy,1995).Inotherwords,notonlycanFDIGranger-causeGDPgrowth,butGDPgrowthcanalsoaffecttheinflowofFDI.Failuretoconsidereitherdirectionofsuchcausalitycanleadtoaninefficientestimationofthemodelandhenceissubjecttot
8、hesimultaneitybias.Second,newdevelopmentsineconometrictheory,suchastimeseriesconceptsofcointegrationandcausalitytesting,havefurtherexpandedthedebateontheFDI-gr
