2、nthropologistmay,forexample,meanverydifferentthingswhentheysay“participation”or“order.”Moreover,thesefieldsmayattachverydifferentnormativevalencestoparticularterms.Youmustpreventsuchdifferencesfromprematurelysinkingyourproposal.Understandinghowyourlanguageislike
3、lytobeinterpretedbyreviewersandbeingveryclearaboutthewayyouusetermsandconceptswillhelpyourproposalbeunderstoodandrespectedacrossdisciplines.Youmayalsowanttoconsiderthefollowingmorespecificpoints:Wheneverpossible,avoidneologisms.Theinventionofnewwordsandconceptsi
4、sanecessarypartofkeepingsocialsciencelanguagedynamicandcurrent.TheAcademy,moreover,providesstronginstitutionalincentivesfordevelopingnewandcatchyphrases.Whilethereisnoruleforwhensuchgenesisisjustified,itmustalwaysbedonewithagreatdealofcare.Unlessyouarequitecerta
5、inthatwhatyouaredescribing—orwhatyouthinkyouaredescribing—isagenuinelynewphenomenon,creatingnewwordsmaycomeacrosssimplyas“oldwineinnewbottles.”Moreover,definingnewtermsmaydrawattention(andspace)awayfromotherconcerns.Beconceptuallyconsistent.Socialscienceterminol
6、ogyisoftenilldefinedandsloppilyused.Inaproposal,suchinconsistencymaybegroundsfordismissal.Ifyouareusingatermorideathatisopentomultipleinterpretations,besurethatyoudefinethetermandsticktothatdefinition.Thismaysoundobvious,butitisnotuncommonforseriousslippagetoocc
7、ur.Ifyouarewritingabout“civilsociety”butmean“nongovernmentalorganizations”(NGOs),whynotjustusethatterm.IfinsomeplacesyoumeanNGOsbutalsomeancitizenchoralgroups,bowlingclubs,etc.,youwillneedtobeclearaboutthatfromtheget-go.Thesamecanbesaidofamyriadofotherterms(e.g.
