3、nwillpassthroughthetunnel.Anapproachtospatialsemanticsthathastheutterance(itselfembeddedindiscourseandabackgroundofpractices)asitsmainunitofanalysis,ratherthantheisolatedword,maybecharacterizedasdialogical(cf.Wold1992)andmoreimportantlyforthepresentcontext–holistic.Suchanapproachaimstodetermi
4、nethesemanticcontributionofeachandeveryelementofthespatialutteranceinrelationtothemeaningofthewholeutterance–adesideratumforsemanticsthatcanbetracedbacktoFrege’s(1953[1884])“contextprinciple”.Onemajoradvantageofsuchanapproachtomore1traditional(cognitive)spatialsemantictheoriesisthatbytakingit
5、spointofdeparturefromthewhole,ratherthanfromtheparts,itdoesnotlimittheanalysistoaparticularlinguisticform(e.gover,cf.Lakoff1987),formclass(e.g.prepositions,cf.Cuyckens1991),ortheoreticallybiasedgrammaticalnotion(e.g.“closed-classelements”cf.Talmy1988).Theconceptualframeworkofsituatedembodimen
6、t(Zlatev1997)impliessuchadialogical,holisticapproachtospatialmeaning,resultinginthetheoryofholisticspatial2semantics(HSS),whichhasbeenappliedtoadiversesetoflanguages.Inthispaper,afterasummaryofthetheoreticalframeworkinSection2,Iwillusethistheorytoanalyzethestructureandsemanticsofspatialuttera
