2、)socialandpoliticalconditions,andifso,whattheproperwayofextendingitis.Thispaperarguesthatinordertoproperlyextendjusticeasfairnesstononidealconditions,Rawlsmostfamousinnovation*theoriginalposition*mustbereconceivedintheformofanonidealoriginalposition.Ibeginbyprovidinganewan
3、alysisoftheideal/nonidealtheorydistinctionwithinRawlstheoreticalframework.Ithensystematicallyconstructanonidealoriginalposition,showingthatalthoughitspartiesmusthaveRawlsprinciplesofidealjusticeandpriorityrelationsasbackgroundaims,thepartiesshouldbeentirelyfreetoweighthose
4、aimsagainstwhateverburdensandbenefitstheymightfaceundernonidealconditions.Next,Ishowthatthepartiesoughttoaimtosecureforthemselvesaspecialclassofnonidealprimarygoods:all-purposegoodssimilartoRawlsoriginalprimarygoods,butwhichinthiscaseareall-purposegoodsindividualsmightuset
5、o(a)promoteRawlsianidealsundernonidealconditions,(b)weighRawlsprinciplesofidealjusticeandpriorityrelationsagainstwhateverburdensandbenefitstheymightfaceundernonidealconditions,and(c)effectivelypursuetheirmostfavoredweightingthereof.Finally,Idefendaprovisionallistofnonideal
