2、ssNetworksinTaiwanABSTRACTAnimportantorganizationalfeatureofChinesefamilyfirmsisthattheyareorganizedthroughanetworkofsmallandmedium-sizedfirmsinter-linkedtooneanotherthroughtiesofkinshipandpersonalrelationships.Basedontheconceptofinstitutionaloverlaps,thisresearcharguesthatthemanageme
3、ntofChinesefamilybusinessnetworksinTaiwanissimultaneouslyinfluencedbytwodifferentfactors:family/interpersonalfactors,andeconomic/strategicfactors.Byusingdatacollectedfrom122affiliatedcompaniesoftwenty-eightfamilybusinessnetworksinTaiwan,thisresearchfoundthattheinternalorganizationsoff
4、amilybusinessnetworksareinfluencedbothbyfamilybusinessconsiderationsandeconomicefficiencyconsiderations,buttheinfluenceofeconomicfactorsismoresignificant.ThisresearchshowsthatalthoughTaiwanesefamilybusinessnetworkshavenotcompletedthetransformationfromentrepreneurialcontroltoprofession
5、almanagement,mostfamilybusinessnetworkshaveadoptedaninternalorganizationthatfollowssomebasiceconomicrationalesproposedintheWesternliterature.1FamilySystemversusEconomicSystem:ChineseFamilyBusinessNetworksinTaiwanIntroductionInrecentdecadesthemostimportantinnovationsinbusinessmanagemen
6、tareemerginginthefast-growingregionoftheworld–theSoutheastAsia.Inthisregion,mosteconomiesaredominatedbyoverseasChinesefamilybusinesses(Seagrave,1995;WeidenbaumandHughes,1996),especiallyinthethreeoverseasChineseeconomies:Taiwan,HongKong,andSingapore.OverseasChinesefamilybusinesseshaveg
7、ainedawidereputationforcostefficiency,responsiveness,flexibility,andglobalcompetitiveness(Carney,1998).TheirsignificanteconomicperformancehasalsosetsoffanemerginglineofstudiesontheinstitutionalandeconomicstructureofEastAsiancapitalismaswellastheorganizationalcharacteristicsofChinesefa
