3、meofrecentfeministwritingonthecanon.ThisentryexploresthedifferentwaysthatfeministphilosophersareinteractingwiththeWesternphilosophicaltradition.Feministphilosophersengagedinaprojectofre-readingandre-formingthephilosophicalcanonhavenoticedtwosignificantareaso
4、fconcern.Thefirstistheproblemofhistoricalexclusion.Feministphilosophersarefacedwithatraditionthatbelievesthattherearenowomenphilosophersand,ifthereareany,theyareunimportant.Ofcourse,womenarenotentirelyabsentfromthehistoryofphilosophy,andthatbringsustotheseco
5、ndchallengeweface.Canonicalphilosophershavehadplentytosayaboutwomenandwhatwearelike.Ingeneralterms,weoftenfindthatphilosophicalnormslikereasonandobjectivityaredefinedincontrasttomatter,theirrationalorwhateveragivenphilosopherassociateswithwomenandthefeminine
6、.Ourtraditiontellsus,eitherimplicitlythroughimagesandmetaphors,orexplicitlyinsomanywords,thatphilosophyitself,anditsnormsofreasonandobjectivity,excludeeverythingthatisfeminineorassociatedwithwomen.Inresponse,feministphilosophershavecriticizedboththehistorica
7、lexclusionofwomenfromthephilosophicaltradition,andthenegativecharacterizationofwomenorthefeminineinit.Feministhistoriansofphilosophyhavearguedthatthehistoricalrecordisincompletebecauseitomitswomenphilosophers,anditisbiasedbecauseitdevaluesanywomenphilosopher
