2、ngacrosswideareanetworkswhichisrapidlygainingmomentum.Whilethesecompressionmethodsexploitredundanciestypicallyfoundinsyntheticimages,noneofthemexploitslargeblocksoftenoccurringverbatiminsequencesofdisplayupdatesbecausedetectingmovementsofsuchblocksiscomputation-allyd
3、emanding.nthispaper,wepresentanovelalgorithmfordetectingblockmovementsinimagesequencesthatisfastenoughforinteractivelogins.WealsointegrateouralgorithmintoTCC,thebestpreviouslyknowncodecforthinclientcomputing.nthepresenceofmotion,ournewcodec,TCC-,typ-icallycompress
4、es50to950timesmoreeÆcientlythanTCC.talsoreducestheend-to-endlatencyofscrollingwebpagesatDSspeedsbyafactorof5.1ntroductionThinclientcomputingisamodelinwhichanentirewindowingsystemisexecutedonaserver,andusersinteractwiththeirapplicationsacrossanetworkfromlightweight
5、clients.Theserverdecouplestheuserinterfacefromanapplication'slogicandsendsdisplayupdatestotheclient,andtheclientrendersdisplayupdatesandsendsinputeventstotheserver.Becauseofitslowertotalcostofownership,thismodelhasgainedwideacceptance.Althoughitistypicallydeployedinl
6、ocalareanetworks,recentadvancesinbroadbandconnectivityhaveleadtoagrowinginterestinthinclientcomputingacrosswideareanetworks.WhileoldernetworkedwindowingsystemslikeXWindowshavehighbandwidthrequirements,sophisticatedcompressionmethodsfordisplaydatahaveenabledthinclient
7、computingatlowerbandwidths.Datacompressionisparticularlyeectiveinthisdomainbecausedisplayupdatesaretypicallyhighlyredundantsyntheticimages.Asyntheticimagehasfarfewercolorsthanpixels,isoftencomposedofsharplydelineatedsolidregionswithoverlaidtext,andpixelsarestatistic
8、allyrelatedtotheirneighborhood.reviousresearch[9,5]hasshownthatmethodsthatexploitthiskindofredundancyperformwellatlowerbandwidths.
