2、ne,sherine}@cs.ualberta.caABSTRACTinmanyoftheseattempts.SomeofthemusetheDBMStechnologyonlytostoreandmanagemeta-data,whiletheWedescribethedesignofanobject-orientedmultimediaactualmultimediaobjectsarestoredinordinaryfileswithverydatabasemanagementsystemthatcanstoreandmanagelittlei
3、ntegrationbetweentheDBMSandthesefiles.ThisSGML/HyTimecompliantmultimediadocuments.ThesystemrestrictstheroleofDBMSsandmakesitdifficult(ifnotiscapableofstoring,withinonedatabase,differenttypesofimpossible)toapplyregulardatabaseaccessmethodstodocumentsbyaccommodatingmultipledocumen
4、ttypemultimediadata.Othersstoresomeofthemultimediaobjectsdefinitions(DTDs).Thisisaccomplishedbydynamically(e.g.,textandstillimages)asbinarylargeobjects(“BLOB”s)creatingobjecttypesaccordingtoelementdefinitionsineachinrelationalDBMSs.EventhoughthisputssomeoftheDTD.Thesystemalsohas
5、toolstoautomaticallyinsertmarked-multimediaobjectsinadatabase,itisusuallynotpossibletoupdocumentsintothedatabase.Wediscussthesystemprovidedatabasefunctionalityovertheseobjects.Forarchitecture,designissuesandthesystemfeatures.example,content-basedqueryingofBLOBsisnotpossiblesince
6、theDBMStreatsthemasbytestringswhose1.INTRODUCTIONinterpretationislefttotheapplication.Stillothersdevelopandimplementtheirownone-of-a-kindmodelsformultimediaTraditionally,multimediaapplicationshavenotfullyexploiteddata.Unfortunately,thisrequireseverythingtobedevelopeddatabasemana
7、gementsystem(DBMS)technology.MostlyfromscratchsincevarioustoolsbasedoninternationaltheyhaveusedDBMSstostoremeta-informationandhavestandardscannotbeusedtogetherwiththeseone-of-a-kindstoredmultimediaobjectsinflatfiles.Theconnectionbetweensystems.theDBMSsandtheobjectfilesisusuallyn
