2、edescribethedesignofamultimediadatabasemanagementsystemforadistributednews-on-demandmultimediainformationsystem.News–on–Demandisanapplicationthatutilizesbroadbandnetworkservicestode-livernewsarticlestosubscribersintheformofmultimediadocuments.Differentnewsprovidersinsertarticlesinto
3、thedatabase,whicharethenaccessedbyusersremotely,overabroadbandATMnetwork.Thepar-ticularsofourdesignareanobject-orientedapproachandstrictadherencetointernationalstandards,inparticularSGMLandHyTime.Themultime-diadatabasesystemhasavisualqueryfacilitywhichisalsodescribedinthispaper.Thev
4、isualqueryinterfaceprovidesthreemajorfacilitiesforendusers:presentation,navigationandqueryingofmultimedianewsdocuments.Themainfocus,however,isqueryingofmultimediaobjectsstoredinthedatabase.Keywords:databasemanagement,SGML,HyTime,object-orientedde-sign1.IntroductionOneofthecharacteri
5、zingfeaturesofmultimediainformationsystemsistheirintegra-tionoflargeamountsofcomplexstructureddata.Thischaracteristicmakesthemanexcel-lentcandidatefortheuseofdatabasemanagementsystem(DBMS)technology.Unfortu-nately,itisstillraretofindmultimediainformationsystemsthatuseDBMSs.Thispre-c
6、ludesthesystemsupportforstandardDBMSfunctionssuchasquerying,updatecontrolthroughtransactions,etc.Sincemostofthecurrentgenerationofmultimediasystemsaresingleusersystemsonpersonalcomputers,thishasnotyetbecomeamajorproblem.However,asnextgenerationmulti-usersystemsaredeveloped(suchasnew
