2、fsocialpsychologicaltopicssuchaspersonperception,illusorycorrelations,cognitivedissonance,socialcategorizationandstereotypes.SmithandDeCoster[28]recentlyproposedarecurrentconnectionistmodelofpersonperceptionandstereotypingthataccountsforanumberofphenomenausuallyseenascontradictoryordifficulttointeg

3、rateintoasinglecoherentconceptualframework.Whiletheirmodelisbasedonclearlydefinedandpotentiallyfar-reachingtheoreticalprinciples,itnonethelesssuffersfromcertainshortcomings,amongthem,theuseofmisleadingdependentmeasuresandtheincapacityofthenetworktodevelopitsowninternalrepresentations.Weproposeanalt

4、ernativeconnectionistmodel-anautoencoder-toovercometheselimitations.Inparticular,thedevelopmentofstereotypeswithinthecontextofthismodelwillbediscussed.1.IntroductionUntilrecently,connectionistmodelshavehadonlyamarginalimpactonresearchinsocialpsychology.However,inthelastfiveyears,researchershavetrie

5、dtoaccountforcertainwellestablishedphenomenainthesocialcognitiveliteratureusingconnectionistmodels.Amongthesephenomenaareillusorycorrelation[7],cognitivedissonance[26,30],personperception[28],impressionformation[16,17],andcausalattribution[22,29].Read&Miller[23]broughttogetherthesedisparatemodelsin

6、areviewbookdedicatedtoconnectionistmodelsinsocialpsychology.LikeSmith[27],webelievethatconnectionistmodelinginsocialpsychologymayleadtoamajortheoreticalintegrationofourunderstandingofsocialbehaviorandcognition.Afteralongperiodofconflictbetweenthe‘socialcognitive’andthe‘socialidentity’approaches,aco
