3、synchronouselectronicpostingsandwritingassignmentstogetherwithethnographicobservations,wetracedthestudentsevolvingunderstandingsofaculturallyrichword,stereo-type,overthecourseofonesemester.Wefirstlookedathowthestudentsunderstoodthemeaningofstereotypeinearlydiscussions,thenathowtheseinitialun

4、derstandingschangedasthestudentsengagedinsocialactivitiesinwhichtheirstancesandidentitiesbecamerelevant,andfinallyathowthesechangeswereexhibitedinlaterdiscussionsandwrittenessays.Ouranalysisdemonstratesconcretelythatlearningasecondlanguageinvolvestheacquisitionnotonlyoflinguisticformsbutalso

5、waysofthinkingandbehavinginnewcommunitiesofpractice.THEFIELDOFSECONDLANGUAGEACQUISI-newwaysofthinking,behaving,andbeinginnewTION(SLA)hasmadesignificantstridesbytak-communities(cf.Lave&Wenger,1991;Wenger,ingasocialapproachtolanguageandlanguage1998).Inthissense,acrucialpartofbecominglearning.T

6、herealizationthattheprocessofac-acompetentparticipantinanewsocialgroup,quiringalanguageispartofamuchlargerpro-orbecomingaspeakerofculture(Ochs,2002,cessofbecomingapersoninsociety(Ochs,2002,p.99),inanL2istheprocessofassociatingp.106),originallyappliedonlytofirstlanguageparticularlinguisticfor
