5、epopulationwithacollegedegree.Nowwehavedroppedtofifth.Among25-to-34-year-olds—aglimpseofhowwewillrankinthefuture—werank12th,whileonce-impoverishedSouthKoreatopsthelist.AnewPewsurveyfindsthatAmericansconsiderthegreatestthreattoourcountrytobethegrowinggapbetweentherichandpoor.Yetwehaveconstructedanedu
6、cationsystem,dependentonlocalpropertytaxes,thatprovidesgreatschoolsfortherichkidsinthesuburbswhoneedtheleasthelp,andbroken,dangerousschoolsforinner-citychildrenwhodesperatelyneedahelpinghand.Toooften,theUS’seducationsystemamplifiesnotopportunitybutinequality.MydadwasaWorldWarIIrefugeewhofledUkrainea
7、ndRomaniaandeventuallymadehiswaytoFrance.HespokeperfectFrench,andPariswouldhavebeenanaturalplacetosettle.ButhefeltthatFrancewasstratifiedandwouldofferlittleopportunitytoapennilessEasternEuropeanrefuge
