3、inion,influencingandmanipulatingpeople‟swayofthinkingwithAmerica‟sculturalhegemony.AmericannewsreportsaboutChinaaffecttheobjectiveunderstandingofChinabypeoplefromtherestoftheworld.Chinesewomen,astheother‟sotherintheviewofAmerica,aredefamedanddistortedbytheAmericannewsm

4、ediainevitably.Asanewbranchofdiscourseanalysis,CriticalDiscourseAnalysis(CDA)studiestherelationshipamonglanguage,ideologyandpowerandhelpslinguiststofindoutthehiddenideologiesbehindthesimpleandplainlinguisticfeatures.BasedonthetheoryofCDA,thepresentstudyanalyzesAmerican

5、newsreports(fromtheNewYorkTimes)onChinesewomenforthepurposeofdescribingtheformalfeaturesofAmericannewsreportsandrevealingtheideologiesandpowerrelationswhichareimpliedinthenewsdiscourse.Thisthesiscarriesoutacriticalstudyofnewsdiscoursebyapplyingtheanalyticalmethodsinter

6、msofFairclough‟sThree-dimensionalmodelandHalliday‟sSystemic-FunctionalGrammar.Inthestagesofdescriptionandinterpretation,theauthorrevealsthelinguisticfeaturesandtheirunderlyingmeaningsofthenewssamplesofthepresentstudy.Threeaspects:transitivity,lexicalclassificationandsp
