1、AbstractThisstudyisacriticalanalysisofthenewsdiscourseinmediaonAmericaimmigrationreform．12newsreportsfrom10mediainstitutionsareselectedandexaminedbytakingcriticaldiscourseanalysismethod．Criticaldiscourseanalysis(CDA)wasalsocalledcriticallinguistics(CL)whichwasproposedbyFowler

2、inLanguageandControlin1979．ThesubjectofCLisdiscourseanalysis．therearetwowaysofdiscourseanalysis：oneisnon—criticaldiscourseanalysis，whichfocusonthelinguisticfeatureofthetextsuchascohesionandcoherence，turn-taking，etc．theotheriscriticaldiscourseanalysisinwhichtheanalysisfocusbot

3、hthelinguisticfeaturesofthetextandtheideologybehindthediscourse．ThetheoreticalbasisofCDAisHalliday’ssystemic-functionallinguistics(SFL)．ThepurposeofCDAistoprovideaccountsoftheproduction，internalstructureandoverallorganizationoftexts．Criticaldiscourseanalysishasmadethestudyofl

4、anguageintoaninter-disciplinarytoolandCanbeusedwithvariousbackgrounds，includingthecriticalstudyofmediatexts．Therefore，thisthesisisacasestudyfromCDAperspective．TheresearchtoolemployedinthisthesisisNormanFairclough’Sthree—dimensionalmodelofdiscourse．Thereasonforsuchchoiceisthat

5、itallowsfocusingmoreontheproductionprocessofdiscourseinthediscursivecontextratherthanjustexaminingthediscursivetext．ThelinguistictheorythatCDAhastraditionallydrawnuponisHalliday’SSystemic—FunctionalGrammar,whichislargelyconcernedwiththefunctionoflanguageinthesocialstructure(F

6、owler,1991)．StartingfromFairclough’Sanalyticalframework，thisthesisaimstoshowhownewsdiscourseinmediaisshapedbyrelationofpowerandideologyandhowthenewsmakerspresenttheirperceptionof‘reality’ideologically,andthereforelinguistically．Throughthediscussionoftheresearchfindings，thethe

7、sisconcludesthattheideologyofnewsmakermaybeembeddedinthediscoursesofreports．Thesimilaritiesordifferencesinideologymayberevealedbyconnectinglinguisticfeatureswithsocial—culturalcontext．Asanimmigrantcountryinhistory,theattitudesofthemediaintheUnitedStatesarecomplicated：ontheone
