3、languagexieyinformalunitshavearousedgreatattention．Scholarshaveconductedstudiesonthemfromtheperspectivesofrhetoric，socialculturalpsychologyandpragmatics．However,seldomisthesystemicstudyfromcognitiveperspective．Groudingonknowledgestructuretheories，ConceptualMetaphorandMetonymyTheory,

4、thisthesistriestodiscussformalunitsfromtheperspectivesofclassification，characteristics，generationandinterpretation．Thethesisoptsforacombinationofaqualitativeapproachandaquantitativeapproach．Furthermore，thisthesisattemptstoanalyzexieyinborrowingmotivationsandexplorethecognitiveproces

5、sesofgenerationandintepretation．Finallyaunifiedframeworkisdepicted．Throughresearching，thisthesisfindsthatxieyinformalunitscanbeclassifiedintofourtypesintermsoftheirextralformalfeatures：languagexieyinformalunits，numericalxieyinformalunits，letterxieyinformalunitsandcode—mixedxieyinfor
