CloudComputingForMobileUsers:CanOffloadingComputationSaveEnergy?ABSTRACTThecloudheraldsaneweraofcomputingwhereapplicationservicesareprovidedthroughtheInternet.Cloudcomputingcanenhancethecomputingcapabilityofmobilesystems,butisittheultimatesolutionforextendingsuchsystems'batterylifetimes?Cloudcomputing1isanewparadigminwhichcomputingresourcessuchasprocessing,memory,andstoragearenotphysicallypresentattheuser’slocation.Instead,aserviceproviderownsandmanagestheseresources,andusersaccessthemviatheInternet.Forexample,AmazonWebServicesletsusersstorepersonaldataviaitsSimpleStorageService(S3)andperformcomputationsonstoreddatausingtheElasticComputeCloud(EC2).Thistypeofcomputingprovidesmanyadvantagesforbusinesses—includinglowinitialcapitalinvestment,shorterstart-uptimefornewservices,lowermaintenanceandoperationcosts,higherutilizationthroughvirtualization,andeasierdisasterrecovery—thatmakecloudcomputinganattractiveoption.Reportssuggestthatthereareseveralbenefitsinshiftingcomputingfromthedesktoptothecloud.1,2Whataboutcloudcomputingformobileusers?Theprimaryconstraintsformobilecomputingarelimitedenergyandwirelessbandwidth.Cloudcomputingcanprovideenergysavingsasaservicetomobileusers,thoughitalsoposessomeuniquechallenges.EXISTINGSYSTEM:Energyefficiencyisafundamentalconsiderationformobiledevices.Cloudcomputinghasthepotentialtosavemobileclientenergybutthesavingsfromoffloadingthecomputationneedtoexceedtheenergycostoftheadditionalcommunication.Existingstudiesthusfocusondeterminingwhethertooffloadcomputationbypredictingtherelationshipsamongthesethreefactors.ThecomputationoffloadingdependsonthewirelessbandwidthB,theamountofcomputationtobeperformedC,andtheamountofdatatobetransmittedD.
