2、alien,Ipositionmyselfin“athirdspace”(Wang,2004)whichembracescontradictions,ambiguity,and“aporia”(Derrida,1993)toaddressthecomplicatedissueofidentityacrosstheconflictingdoublesofcultureandgendersothatnewsubjectivitiescanbegenerated.Ifcacophonyinthecurriculumfield(Mar

3、shall,etal.,2000),Iwouldargue,isnotleadingtofragmenteddisarraybutmovingtowardsashiftingrealminwhichimaginationandinspirationcanbesparked,canwegesturetowardsconflictingdirectionstocultivatethebirthofnewtheoriesandperspectives?Beinganalienintermsofcurriculumidentities

4、andpersonalidentitypointsmetowardsanewspacebeyondunity,dichotomy,orseparation.Suchanewspace,whichIwouldliketoterma“third”space,iswhatIamgoingtodiscussinthisessayfromtheidentityoftheteacherespeciallyindealingwithdiversityissues.Walkingintotheuniversityclassroomteachi

5、ngmulticulturaleducation,Ithoughtthatasapersonneitherwhitenorblack,notevenanAmerican,Imightbeabletohaveathirdspacebeyondthedichotomyofblack/whitetoteachcritically.Myillusionwasbrokenontheveryfirstdayofmyclass.Athirdspacecannotbeassumed;itmustbecreated.FormeasaChines

6、ewomanwhoteachesinanAmericaneducationalfield,theverystatusasanalieninmultiplesensesopensupacomplexsiteonwhichImusttrytodigtunnelsinordertocomeoutreachingnewgrounds.Suchisalsothechallengetoeducatorswhoaresituatedinmultipleworldsofboththemselvesandtheirstudentsinagene
