3、ludingmanylegalinstitutions,as"carriersofhistory".BythisImeanwesupposemanyofthemtohaveevolvedintotheirpresentformsfromrecognizablysimilarstructuresthatcanintoexistenceatsometimeinthepasttosatisfysomeonceimportantsocialpurpose.Thecommonplaceexplanationofthewidespreadconv
4、entionofextendinganopenhandingreetingastrangerfollowsthisformula:itisthoughttohavederivedfromtheneedtoshowthatonewasnotbearingaweapon,suchasaknife,orcluborarock.Wesupposeittobenaturalthattheconvention,oncehighlyfunctional,atsomepointbecamepurelycustomaryandpersistsevent
5、houghthatoriginalfunctionnolongerisimportant.Anotherinstanceofsuchpersistencecanbecitedinthecaseofaformalinstitution:theU.S.FederalReserveSystemtoday--unlikethecentralbankofothercountries--comprisestwelveregionalbanks,ratherthanasinglecentralbank(possiblywithbranches).A
