4、thevastmajorityofSierraLeoneans,iseatenonadailybasisbyeveryhouseholdinthecountry.Asthemostimportantfoodcrop,riceiswidelygrowninSierraLeone.Initsrecentreport,StatisticsSierraLeone(SSL)notedthatricecropcontributesthelargesttoagriculturalGDPofSierraLeonewhilea

5、tthesametimeprovidesemploymentformorethan70%ofthelaborforceinSierraLeone.Localsupplyofricehassignificantimplicationsforfoodsecurityandfoodself-sufficiencyinSierraLeone.Despiteitsimportanceasastaplefood,ricecultivationinSierraLeonehasbeendeclininginrecentyea

6、rs.SierraLeonewasnotonlyindependentintermsofrice,butwasalsoanetexporterofriceuntilthe1970s.Duetocontinuouslong-termnegligencebystateauthorities,SierraLeone’simportationofricesteadilygrewafterthe1970saslocalproductionincreasinglylaggedbehindconsumptiondemand

7、.ThedropinriceproductioninSierraLeoneisevidentinthewideningsupply-demandgapforthecropinthecountry.Thishasresultedinthesequentialuseofscarceforeignreservetoimportricethatcanotherwisebeefficientlyproducedlocallyatlowercost.Furthermore,thedeclineinlocalcultiva

8、tionofricehashadmyriadsocio-economicimplicationsforSierraLeone;includingbalanceofpaymentdeficit,skyrocketingconsumerpricesandbulgingforeigndebt.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoevaluatetheinfluentialfactorsof
