2、FunctionalGrammar,PartI,1989,p.12).O.IntroductionInapaperhonoringSimonC.DikandhisseminalworkonFunctionalGrammar(FG)itmaybeexpectedthatspecialattentionbepaidtothefunctionalpropertiesoflanguageandlanguageuse.Similarly,givenmyownframeworkofresearch,itmayalsobeexpectedthat
3、suchafunctionalapproachshouldfocusondiscourse.Ishallfulfilltheseexpectationsbyexaminingsomeoftheimplicationsofwhatmaybecalled`FunctionalDiscourseAnalysis'(FDA).FDAhasalinguisticcomponent,whichdealswithgrammaticalandotherfunctionalrelationsoftextualstructuresorstrategie
4、s,andabroader,interdisciplinarycomponent,whichanalyzesthefunctionalrelationsbetweenthesetextualstructuresandvariousstructuresofthe`context,suchasthoseofcognition,interaction,andeventhestructuresofthesocietalorculturalmacro-level.Thefirstcomponentwillbecalled`Functional
5、TextAnalysis'andthesecond`FunctionalText-ContextAnalysis'.`FunctionalDiscourseAnalysis'28TeunA.vanDijkisusedtodenotetheintegrationofbothapproaches.Followingcommonpractice,Ishallusetheterm`functional'todenotebothkindsofrelationship,althoughobviouslydifferentkindsoflunct
6、ion'areinvolved.FunctionalTextAnalysisandFunctionalGrammarnotonlyoverlap,theyalsohavecommonrootsandsharelinkswithrelatedapproaches,e.g.,inTagmemics(Pike1967;Grimes1975;Longacre1977),andespeciallyinCzechstructuralistworkonFunctionalSentencePerspective(FSP),forinstanceon
7、suchimportantbutstillelusivenotionsasTopic/Theme,Comment/RhemeandFocus(Danes1974).TheCzechlinguistswereamongthefirsttoanalyzesystematicrelationsbetweensentencesoftexts,andemphasizedthedependencyofsententialtopicsfromtypicallytextualphenomenasuchasthedynamicrelationship
