2、TechnicalReport2005-59AbstractNumerousmechanismshavebeenproposedforimprovingTCPperformanceoverwirelesslinks,includingthoseinwirelesscellularnetworks.Inthispaper,weinfertheexistenceandinvestigatetheperformanceofoneclassoftheseperformance-enhancingapproaches,split-conne

3、ctionapproaches,incommercialcellulardatanetworks.SpecialattentionisgiventothesocalledSplit-TCPandTCPproxyapproaches.WepresentinferencetechniquestoidentifywhetheracellularproviderimplementsSplit-TCPorTCPproxy.Throughend-to-endmeasurementsovercommercialcellularnetworkso

4、peratedbythreedifferentproviders(includingtwoCDMA2000networksandoneGPRSnetwork),wendthatallthreeprovidersselectivelyimplementSplit-TCPorTCPproxyforcertainapplications(e.g.,HTTP).Wealsondthattheimplementationsdifferfromprovidertoprovider.Experimentalresultsdemonstrat

5、ethattheperformancegainsfromSplit-TCPdependonowsizesandthatTCPproxyusingdatacompressionoutperformsSplit-TCP.I.INTRODUCTIONTheexplosivegrowthofwirelessnetworksposeschallengestoexistingnetworkprotocolsandapplicationsthataredesignedforwirednetworks.Forinstance,TCP,themo

6、stwidelyusedtransportprotocolintheInternet,hasbeenshowntoperformpoorlyinwirelessnetworks[1].NumerousmechanismshavebeenproposedforimprovingTCPperformanceoverwirelesslinks,includingthoseinwirelesscellularnetworks.Theseapproachesfallbroadlyintothreeclasses[2],[3],[4]:lin

7、klayerapproaches,end-to-endapproaches,andsplit-connectionapproaches.Split-connectionapproachesinsertasplitpointbetweenthewirelessandwiredhost,thussplittingtheend-endTCPconnectionintotwoconnections:onebetweenthewiredhostandthesplitpoint,andtheotherbetweenthesplitpointa
