3、LESINTEACHEREDUCATIONPROGRAMS.(UnderthedirectionofDr.DeannaKeith)SchoolofEducation,July,2009.Thisstudyexaminedtheexperiencesofnontraditionalfemalestudentsage30andolderastheypersistedinteachereducationprograms.Theimpactofliferoles,internalandexternalriskstopers
4、istence,andsupportsystemswereconsidered.Nontraditionalstudentsjugglemanyresponsibilitiesincludingbalancingacareer,family,andcoursework(Compton&Schock,2000).Theproblemisthatoverhalfofnontraditionalstudentsenrolledinteachereducationprogramsappeartobeatriskofleav
5、ingcollegebeforecompletingtheirprogramofstudy.Casestudiesoffivenontraditionalfemalestudentsfromthreeuniversitysettingswereconductedtounderstandtheoverallexperiences,barriersencountered,andsupportsutilizedinteachereducationprograms.Interviews,two-columnmemoing,
6、anddocumentanalysiswereusedtotriangulatedata.Thefindingsrevealedthatsituationalbarriers,followedbyinstitutionalbarriers,posedsignificantthreatstopersistenceinteachereducationprograms.Allofthenontraditionalfemalesstruggledtobalancehomeandschoolresponsibilitiesa
7、tsomepointwhileenrolledinateachereducationprogram.Participantsprimarilyreliedonfamilymembersforemotionalsupportthroughouttheirprograms.Themajorimplicationofthisstudyistheneedforteachereducationprogramstoconsiderrevisingpoliciesandproceduresthatlimitparticipati
8、onbynontraditionalstudents.Classesneedtobeofferedattimesconvenientfornontraditionalstudentsandteachereducationprogramsshouldtrytoivsimulatethesupportprovidedbyfamilymemberstohelpst
