3、experienceofreceivingtenurethroughthepersonalnarrativesofDirectorsofLibraryandInformationScienceSchoolsintheUSA.Fifty-fiverespondentswereaskedtoranktheemphasisofthevariablesoperatingintenurebasedontheirexperience.Participantsagreedthatthegrantingofautono
4、myviatenurewasanopportunitytoexerciseacademicfreedom.Withtenurecametheresponsibilitytocontributeasacitizenofboththeinstitutionalanddisciplinarycommunitiesoftheprofession.ThemostprominentfactorindeterminingtenureandpromotiondecisionsforLISfacultyisdemonst
5、rationofresearchproductivitythroughpeerreviewedpublications:articles,booksandconferenceproceedings.Teachingandservicearealsoimportantcomponentsofacademiclife.Itwasfoundthatcollaborationunderpinnedcollegialityandcreatedanenvironmentconducivetoresearch.Int
6、urn,thestabilityandcollegialityofatenuredpositionmadetheinstitutionworkasateachingandlearningenvironment.BackgroundandReviewoftheLiteratureAcademictenureundergoespersistentcriticism.Themostpervasivecriticismofacademictenureisthatitprotectsfacultymembersw
7、hoarenolongercontributingtotheinstitutiononcetheinitialacknowledgementoftenurehasbeenmade.Thisallegationwasperhapsevidenttoundergraduatesfortyyearsago,becausethelegalpadsfromwhichtheirtenuredprofessorslectured(ofteninlarge,impersonallecturehalls)wereyell
8、owedandbrittlefromyearsofuse.HenryAllen(2000)wrotethatcriticsofhighereducationusetenure“asascapegoatforaplethoraofinstitutionalshortcomings”andthatinspiteofscapegoatstatus,tenureremains“thelynchpinofacademicfreedom”(p.95).
