1、TOTALLOSSFARMNATUREAREA(TLFNA)Introduction:TheTotalLossFarmNA,coversanareaof10ha,issituatedinthenorthwesternpartoftheSymonsCampus(FigureTLFNA-1),westofHighway28andnorthofWoodlandDriveandcontainsthehighestgroundoncampus.ThisNatureAreaconsistsoftwoseparatepartsofanabandonedfarm.Thereareseveralinf

2、ormaltrailsleadingintothisNatureArea,fromWoodlandDriveandfromHighway28.TopographyandSoils:ThenorthernsectionofthisNatureArea(FigureTLFNA-1)occupiesthesoutheasternslopeofalongridge,andtheremainderisinanarrowlowlandatthebottomoftheslope.Thesouthernpartoccupiesathefloodplainofthestreamwhicheventua

3、llyrunsunderHighway28intotheLock22NA.Thenorthandsouthsectionsareconnectedbygentlyslopingupland.SoilsoftheuplandpartsoftheTLFNAbelongtotheOtonabeeSerieswhichhaveamediumtexture,aremoderatelystonyandhavegoodtoexcessivedrainage.FoxboroSeriessoilswhichhaveacoarsetexture,arestonefreeandhavepoortovery

4、poordrainageoccurinthenorthsectionwetlands.AlongthewesternboundaryisasmallareaofWaupoosSeriessoilswhicharefinetextured,slightlystonyandhavegooddrainage.Hydrology:AstreamrunsalongthebaseoftheslopethroughthenorthsectionNatureAreaintoanadjacentfieldandthenre-enterstheNatureAreasapproximately190mto

5、thesouth(Fig.TLFNA-1).Thestreamappearstooriginatefromspringsandseepsontheneighbouringpropertyandthissectionofthestreamapparentlyrunsyearround.Seepagefromaseriesofspringsalsooriginatesfromtheslopeabovethestreamtocreateastripofverywetsoilsbetweenthespringsandstream.Thestreamflowseast,underHighway

6、28,andprovideswaterfortheplantsandanimalsintheLock22NA.NorthwestoftheintersectionofHighway28andWoodlandDrive,isasmallthicketwetlandmaintainedbysurfacedrainagefromditches.Runoffintheseditchescanbesubstantialasindicatedbydepositsofroadsidegravelsweptintothelowareaadjacenttothewetland.Vegetation:T
