2、esarealsoatriskofuniqueinjurycalledagrowthplatefracture.Thesefracturescanresultinlong-termconsequencessuchaslimbdeformityorunequallengthoflimbs.Thustheseinjuriesrequirespecialattention.Mostgrowthplatefractures,however,areatlowriskforproblems,particularlyinthosewhoarenearth
3、eendofgrowth.Whatisagrowthplate?Thegrowthplate(physis)isanareaofdevelopingtissueneartheendsoflongbones,betweenthewidenedpartoftheshaftofthebone(metaphysis)andtheendofthebone(epiphysis).Thegrowthplateregulatesandhelpsdeterminethelengthandshapeofthematurebone.TheLongbonesoft
4、hebodydonotgrowfromthecenteroutward.Instead,growthoccursateachendofthebonearoundthegrowthplate.Thegrowthplateisthelastportionofthebonetoharden(ossify),whichleavesitvulnerabletofracture.Becausemuscleandbonedevelopatdifferentspeeds.Achild’sbonesmaybeweakerthanthesurroundingc
5、onnectivetissue(ligaments).Children’sboneshealfasterthanadult’sbones.Thishastwoimportantconsequences.First,itmeansthatachildwithaninjuryshouldseeanorthopedicsurgeonwithinfivetosevendaysbeforethebonebeginstoheal.Second,theperiodofimmobilizationrequiredforhealingwillnotbeasl
