3、students.Wealsofoundthroughresearchthatgamescanbeeffectiveteachers;wehopetoincorporatecharacteristicssuchasgoalsandbothartificialandhumaninteractioninordertocreateagamethatisbotheducationalandfun.24SectionIRecently,therehasbeenadramaticincreaseinthenumberofstudentsenr
4、olledinEnglishforSpeakersofOtherLanguages(ESOL)classes(Kindler,2002).Duetotimelimitations,ESOLclassescanonlycovercertainmaterial.InorderforstudentstolearnthemaximumamountofEnglishpossibleinthetimegiven;thereisaneedforeducationaltoolsthatfurtherexposestudentstotheEngli
5、shlanguage.Onesuchtooliseducationalsoftware,atechnologythatisbecomingmoreprevalentinlanguageeducationwithprovensuccess(Wood,2001).AlthoughtheuseofeducationalsoftwareisidealforESOLclasses,ithasnotyetbeenwidelyutilized.Therefore,thequestionbecomes:“Howeffectiveisaninter
6、activemultiplayercomputergameasaneducationaltooltocomplementanESOLcurriculum?”WeseektoaddressthisquestionbycreatingourowngamesoftwaretoincreaseEnglishproficiency,testingourproductonseveralgroupsofESOLstudents,anddeterminingthegame’seffectsbyanalyzingourcollecteddata.W
7、ewillconsiderthefollowingsub-problems:howtoteacheffectively,howtoengageourstudents,andhowtocreateagamethatadaptstostudents’individualneeds.Learninganylanguagerequiresbothoralandwrittencommunication;listening,reading,speaking,andwritingmustberepresentedinourgame.Gamest
