1、ThesisGuidelinesPPADDepartmentJuly2010TheMPPA/MPP/MPAThesisRequirementThecompletionofamaster’sthesisisarequirementforgraduationinthePPADmaster’sprograms.Thepurposeofthisrequirementisthreefold:1)toprovideacapstoneactivitythatgivesstudentstheopportunitytointegra
2、teandapplywhattheyhavelearnedintheprogramandintheirprofessionallife;2)toenablestudentstohonetheirskillsinpreparationfortheirfutureprofessionaland/oracademiccareers;and3)torequirestudentstodemonstratemasteryofcriticalprofessionalandanalyticskillsbypreparingasig
3、nificantprofessionalproduct.Aspartofourongoingeffortstoupgrade,strengthen,andexpandourmaster’sprograms,wehaveredesignedthePPADthesiselementtosupportstudentsastheydevelop,defend,andfinalizetheirtheses.Ouraimisforeverystudenttocompletehisorherthesissuccessfullya
4、ndinanappropriatetime-period.Ingeneral,youshouldplanonspending6-9monthsonyourthesis,coterminouswithyourfinalyearofclassesintheprogram.Inotherwords,youshouldbeginworkingonthethesisnolaterthanthemidpointofyourcoursework,expectingtospend2-3monthsworkingfulltime,o
5、rnearlyso,onyourthesis.Studentsareencouragedtobeginthinkingabouttopicsandhowtheymightpursuethemfromthetimetheyentertheprogram,sothattheycantakeadvantageofcourseassignments(researchpapers,etc.)asbuildingblocksfortheirtheses.Whileeachstudenthimselforherselfbears
6、theresponsibilityfordevelopmentofathesis,weintendstudentstopursuetheirtheseswiththesupportandcollaborationofthefacultyand,asappropriate,theirfellowstudents.Toencourageandfacilitatethiscollaboration,severalcourses–ResearchMethods,thePPADPracticum,andtheResearch
7、Seminar,inparticular–havebeendesignedinparttosupportthethesisprocess.ResearchMethods(500)isrequiredforallstudents;theThesisResearchSeminar(598)isrequiredforallstudentsenrollinginFall2010orthereafter.Thisguidanceisintendedtohelpyouplanforandthinkthroughthethesi
8、sprocess.Wewillmodifyandclarifythisguidanceasquestionsandissuesarise,sopleasefeelfreetocomment.Thisdocumentismeanttoprovidemoresubstantiveguidancetocomplementtheformattingandpresen
