2、firstandthirty-thirdparallelsoflatitude,andisboundedonthenorthbytheGilaRiver,whichseparatesitfromtheterritoryofNewMexico;ontheeastbytheRioBravodelNorte,(RioGrande),whichseparatesitfromTexas;onthesouthbyChihuahuaandSonora,Mexicanprovinces;andonthewestbytheColoradoRiverofth
3、eWest,whichseparatesitfromUpperandLowerCalifornia.Thisgreatregionissixhundredmileslongbyaboutfiftymileswide,andembracesanareaofaboutthirtythousandsquaremiles.ItwasacquiredbypurchasefromMexico,duringthemissionofGeneralGadsden,atacostoftenmillionsofdollars.Intheoriginaltrea
4、ty,asnegotiatedbyGeneralGadsden,amoresouthernboundarythantheoneadoptedbytheSenateoftheUnitedStatesinconfirmingthetreaty,wasconcededbySantaAnna.Thelineatpresentisirregularinitscourse,andcutsofffromourTerritorytheheadoftheSantaCruzriverandvalley,theSonoitavalley,theSanBerna
5、rdinovalley,thewholecourseoftheColoradoriverfromapointtwentymilesbelowthemouthoftheGilariver,and,worsethanall,thecontroloftheheadoftheGulfofCalifornia,andtherichandextensivevalleyofLakeGuzman,besidesalargeandextremelyvaluablesilverregion,wellknownbothtoMexicansandAmerican
6、s--theplanchasdelaPlatte.GeneralGadsden'slineincludednearlyalltheterritorysouthoftheGilarivertothethirty-firstparalleloflatitude--alltheadvantagesabovementioned--gaveusthemouthoftheColoradoriver,andprobablyaportneartheheadofthegulfatAdair'sBay.Wehavenoaccuratesurveyofthew
7、estcoastoftheGulfofCalifornia,butIamstronglyofopinionthattheoriginallineconcededbyMexicowouldhavethrownaportionofthegulfintoAmericanhands,bycuttingoffanarmofitextendingeastandnorthfromthemainbodyofwater.AportonthegulfisofgreatandimmediatenecessitytoourPacificpossessions.O
