4、terIslandstatues:Expertshaveknownaboutthebodiesbefore,butwhentheseimagesstartedcirculatingreadersdoubtedtheirauthenticityTheteamalsofoundlargequantitiesofredpigment,someofwhichmayhavebeenusedtopaintthestatuesProjectdirectorJoAnneVanTilburgsaid:'OurEISPexcavationsrecentl

7、intobedrockaroundthepostholes·Posts,ropes,stones,anddifferenttypesofstonetoolswereallusedtocarveandraisethestatuesuprightTheremoteisland-oneoftheremotestintheworld,tuckedawayintheSouthPacificOcean-wasoncehometoaPolynesianpopulation,whosehistoryremainsmysterious.Theylike
8、lysailedtotheislandsincanoes-a1,500-milejourneyovertheopenwaters,andthen,oncetheylanded,theybeganrelentesslycarvingthestonestatues.Thisledtotheirowndownfall:BythetimeEuropeansdiscoveredtheislandinthe1700s,thepopulationhaddecimatednearlyallthetreesintheislandtohelpwithth
