4、oreextensive．Thecorevalueofanewscommentarymainlyexistsinitslanguage，sinceitbelongstothest3rleofargumentativewhosemajorfunctionistoexpressopinionsinordertoconvincereaders．ThisthesiswillexploreintothelanguageofEnglishnewscommentariesabstractedfrommainEnglishnewspapersandmagazinesathomeandabroad．Thepi

5、npointofthelinguisticaspectofEnglishnewscommentariesinthisthesisisfuzzylanguage．Inthefirstpart,thethesisconductsacomprehensivereviewoftheresearchofnewscommentariesandfuzzinessstudy．Inthesecondpart,thethesismakesapresentationoffuzzylanguageinEnglishnewscommentaries．Theauthorrandomlyselects25Englishn

6、ewscommentariesfromChinesemediaand25fromforeignmedia．Thentheauthorcomparesthefrequenciesofmodalverbhedges，adjectixreandadverbhedgesasrepresentativesoffuzzylanguageinthese50newscommentaries．Basedontheresultsofthisresearch，theauthorfmdsthat：(1)Theappearanceofmodalverbhedgesismorefrequentthanthatofadj

7、ectiveandadverbhedges；(2)Chinesecommentatorstendtousefuzzyexpressionswithdeeperdegreesofcertaintymorefrequentlythanforeigncounterpartsdo；(3)Chinesecommentatorsusealmostthesameamountofhedgesasusedbyforeigncommentators，andthetotalquantityofhedgesisverysmallinthese50newscommentaries．Althoughfuzzylangu

8、agedoesnotoccupytoomuchspaceinnewscommentaries，theydoexistinthiskindofliterarystylewhichconsidersprecisionasthepriority．Theymusthavepositiverolestoplayinspecificcontextsofnewscommentaries．Therefore，theauthorappliespragmatictheoriesintheanalysisoffuzzylanguageinnewscommentaries．Thetheoriesusedarepol

9、itenessprinciple，cooperativeprincipleandrelevancetheory．Afterallin-depthanalysis，theauthorconcludesthepositivefunctionsoffuzzylanguageinnewscommentaries：(1)TheyCanincreasethevalidityofcommentators’opinion；(
