4、ity.ItwasanelementinDoctorSloper'sreputationthathislearningandhisskillwereveryevenlybalanced;hewaswhatyoumightcallascholarlydoctor,andyettherewasnothingabstractinhisremedies-healwaysorderedyoutotakesomething.Thoughhewasfelttobeextremelythorough,hewasnotuncomfortablytheoretic;an
5、difhesometimesexplainedmattersrathermoreminutelythanmightseemofusetothepatient,heneverwentsofar(likesomepractitionersonehadheardof)astotrusttotheexplanationalone,butalwaysleftbehindhimaninscrutableprescription.Thereweresomedoctorsthatlefttheprescriptionwithoutofferinganyexplana
6、tionatall;andhedidnotbelongtothatclasseither,whichwasafterallthemostvulgar.ItwillbeseenthatIamdescribingacleverman;andthisisreallythereasonwhyDoctorSloperhadbecomealocalcelebrity.Atthetimeatwhichwearechieflyconcernedwithhimhewassomefiftyyearsofage,andhispopularitywasatitsheight
