2、iththedevelopmentofamethodforbrazingmetaltoformbandsofsawsteel.Wilkiepossessedawoodcuttingbandsawandthelimitationsinherentwiththisdesignprovidedthegenesisfordevelopmentofhismetalcuttingsaw.WhilecuttingoutlettersforthenameofamachineshopbeingestablishedinMinneapolisin1

3、927,Wilkiemusedabouttheincreaseinproductivityandcostreductionthatcouldbeachievedwiththedevelopmentofametalcuttingbandsawcapableofthesameefficiencypossessedbythewoodcuttingbandsaw.Hebegantoexperimentwithhiswoodworkingsawduringthegreatdepressionofthe1930’s.Progresssoon

4、replacedalltheoriginalcomponentswiththeexceptionoftheframeandwheels.In1933(stillduringthedepression)hepatentedhismachineconfidenthehaddevisedametalcuttingbandsaw.Withhistwobrothers,RobertandJames,moreexperimentalworkproducedsawguidesthatwouldholdthesawbandridgedatthe

5、pointofcutandafilebandforfinishingcuts.InMay1935,Wilkiesoldthefirstbandmachinebuiltspecificallytosawandfilemetal.Itwasessentiallyabench-typesawingmachinemountedonacastbase.ItwascalledthemodelABW.Improvementscontinuedinframerigidity,variablespeedpulleys,builtinbuttwel

6、ders,bearingsandincreasedpower.Bylate1938theverticalbandsawhadprogressedtothepointthatitscharacteristicappearancethatappearstodaywasset.Additionalprogresshascomeprincipallyinthreeareas;sawblades,machinesandmaterials.Ascanbeexpectedprogressisinterrelatedandatsometimes
