5、toprestigemaybesupportedbyusingvalidatinggroupsandindirectindexesofquality,buttheformercanrestrictmarketingofprestige-promotingendorsements,andemphasisuponindirectindexestendstosubvertquality.Prestigebaseduponextrinsic,non-essentialcharacteristicsoftheorganizationandproductiscultivatedincom
6、petitivesituations,buttheproductionandmarketingofextrinsiccharac-teristicscreatesinternalconflictsanddeflectionfromgoals.Heavyemphasisuponindirectindexesofqualityandextrinsiccharacteristicsmayshapethecharacterandgoalsofanorganizationtoanunan-ticipatedextent.Thispapercallsattentiontotheimage
