2、isman-orientedandman-centered.Women,regardedasaweakergenderinsociety,arediscriminatedforalongtimeandcompletelysubordinatedinpoliticallife,economiclifeandevenfamilylifeinthesocietydominatedbymen.Unavoidably,thiskindofphenomenonhasbeenembodiedinlanguages.Inlinguisticaspect,languageisbias-basedandw
3、omensufferfromlanguagesexism.TheporpuseofthethesisistoprobeintothesexualdiscriminationinbothChineseandEnglishlanguage,andtoanalyzeandsummarizetheexistenceandthecausesofthem.Ⅱ.LiteratureReview2.1TheDefinitionofSexismForthesakeofaccomplishingafinerstudy,thefundamentalnotion-sexistlanguageanditsrel
4、atedconceptsmustbemadeclearfirst.“Sexism”referstodiscriminationbymembersofonesexagainsttheother,especiallybymalesagainstfemales,basedonthethoughtthatonesexissuperior.AccordingtoRuether(1993:165),“Sexismisgenderprivilegeofmalesoverfemales.Itismalesprimarilywhohaveoriginatedthisformofoppression,be
5、nefitedfromit,andperpetuatedit,legallyandideologically.”Inotherwords,itisabeliefsystembasedontheassumptionthatthephysicaldifferencesbetweenmalesandfemalesaresosignificantthattheyshoulddeterminevirtuallysocialandeconomicrolesofmenandwomen.Andsexismhasmanifesteditselfindifferentwaysindifferenthist
6、oricalperiodsandindifferentcultures.“Sexsimmanifestsinallformsubtlegesturesandespeciallylanguagetoexploitationandoppression,andinallhumaninstituttionsfromthefamilytothemultinationalcorporation”(Rothenberg,1988:21)Thelanguageencodedwithsexismisreferredassexistlanguage.Sexistlanguagecanbedefinedin
