4、timatedata,oraretheymerelyalargepileofcapricious,subjectiveinterpretationsimposedbyourselvesandbythefieldworkers?First,withregardtotheconversionofmusicalnotationtogrids,theopportunitiesforanysubjectivejudgmentsonourparttoinfluencethetheoreticaloutcomearelow.Theonlypartsoftheconvers
5、iontaskthatarepotentiallysubjectivearetheestablishmentofgridstructureabovethelevelsindicatedbymusicalbarlines(usually,nothingdependsonwhatthisstructureis),andthedivisionofthetemporallycontinuousgridintolines.Inourexperience,anysubtlejudgmentcallsthatariseinthelattertaskdonotaffectt
6、heclassificationofthelinesbyrhythmiccadence,andthuswouldnotaffectourresults.Second,wemustconsiderthehardertaskfacedbythemusicalfieldworker;thatofestablishingtherhythmicstructurefrompurelyauditoryimpressions.Ingeneral,wethinkthattranscriptionascarriedoutbyskilledmusiciansissufficien
