2、omicandsymbolicexchange.Secondly,thecityenvironmentprovidesaforumforculturalimpressionsandexpressions.AsnotedintheclassicalwritingsofSimmelandBenjamin,themetropolisincorporatesanentiresystemofrooms,stagesandpassageswherethereflexiveindividualcangainsymbolicexper
3、iences,aswellasmanifestinghisorheridentity.Thirdly,sincethemajorcitiesalsoincorporateamajorityofthecultureindustries,includingmostmediafirms,advertisingagenciesanddesigncompanies,theyarealsotheepicenterfromwhichagreatshareofthesymbolicflowsemanate.Incontemporary
4、society,significantsharesofpeople’sculturalhorizonsareshapedbytheimagesandmessagesarisinginmetropolitancontexts,manyofwhicharegeographicallydistant.Finally,intheshapeoftraveldestinations,citiesareturnedintotheobjectsofdirectconsumption.Thedominantimageofthecity,
5、intermsofhistoricalnarrative,personalities,buildings,companies,etc.,isnormallyconsumedinamannerinfluencedbycommercialactors,reinforcedbymediatedsigns.Professionalimage-makersarecontinuouslyworkingonthesymbolicrefuelingofthecity-as-commodity.However,thecreationof
6、thecityimageisnotonlyamatterofculturalpolicy.Whatthecityactuallybecomes,andhowdifferentgroupsexperienceit,dependupontheactivitiesofsocialactorsaswellassystemicforces.Forexample,eventhoughtherearestronghegemonicforces,foundeduponalliancesbetweenpolitical,cultural
7、andecon-omicactors,supportingadominantimageofthecity,alternativeandoppositionalgroupingsarealwayschallengingsuchpointsofview(seeFigure1).Currently,theclearestexamplesaredefinitelytheinternational‘reclaimthestreets’and‘reclaimthecity’movements(seeKlein,2000).Andd
8、uringthepastfewyears,top-levelpoliticalmeetingssuchastheonesinSeattle,Prague,GoteborgandGenoahaveledtoworld-widemediaexposureoftheintensifiedstruggleoverurbanspaceing
