2、entinstructureandcontent.MyexperienceinteachingwritingtoundergraduatesatCentralSouthUniversityshowsthatincoherenceisarecurringprobleminthestudents’writingandcanbeamajorobstacletotheirsuccessinwritingclasses.“Icannotfollowyourargument”and“Idonotunderstandwhatyouaresaying”arejusttwoofthecommentsw

3、rittenonstudent’spaperstoindicatetheinabilityofthepaperstobeunderstoodbytheirteachers.Unfortunately,unlikegrammaticalerrorswhichcanbeeasilycorrected,errorsincoherencearemoredifficulttohandleastheyinvolveachunkofunits,suchasaseriesofsentencesandparagraphs.MostESLteachersmaybelievethattheyhavease

4、nseofwhatcoherenceis,buttheyoftendiscusscoherencewiththeirstudentsinvagueterms.Asaresult,studentsdonothaveaclearunderstandingoftheconceptofcoherence,oftenfocusingonlyonerrorsatsentencelevelwhenaskedtorevisetheirownworkorthatoftheircolleagues.Coherenceisanareathatdeservesteacher’sattention.Thisp

5、aperaimsatmakingstudentsunderstandwhatcoherenceisandawareoftheirerrorsinwritingwhichtheydidnotpayanyattentiontobefore.AndIhopethispaperwillbealsobeneficialtoteachingofEFLwriting.First,itisnecessarytogiveacleardefinitionofcoherence.Whatiscoherence?Coherencecanbegenerallyviewedintwoaspects:test-b

6、asedandreader-basedcoherence(Johns,1986).Text-basedcoherencereferstothefeaturesassociatedwiththeinternalstructureofthetextitself.Itisatextualphenomenon,linguisticdevices,whichiscloselyconnectedwiththeformofthetext.Reader-basedcoherenceisassociatedwiththemeaningfulaspectofwriter-readerinteractio
