3、(49MtCO2e/year)wasduetoheating.AteamconsistingofresearchersattheUniversityofReading，theUniversity’sFacilitiesManagementDirectorateandNeweraControlsLtd.conductedtwoseparateinvestigationstomeasureanddemonstratethepotentialfortwoimportantandcomplementaryapproachesinachievinge

4、nergyefficiencyandgreenhousegasemissionreductionsinbuildings.Thefirstfocusedoninfluencinguserbehavior，inanofficebuildingonthemaincampus.ThesecondconsideredaninterventionistapproachinanaccommodationblockattheHenleyBusinessSchoolusingintelligentmonitoringandcontrolsystems.To

5、date，thefirstinvestigationhasdemonstrateda20%savinginlighting，officeequipmentandcateringenergyuse，largelythroughuserawarenessandbehaviorchange.Thesecondhasindicatedthatsavingsinheatingenergyoftheorderof24%canbeachievedbyenhancementoflegacyBuildingManagementSystems(BMS)usin

6、gaBuildingEnergyManagementSystem(BEMS).ThereisalsoscopeforfurthersavingsiftheBEMSsystemisextendedtootherservicessuchaslighting.GeneraldescriptionOverthepast20yearsmanydifferentbuildingshavebeenlabeledas“intelligent”(Clements-Croome，2004).Industryhasmanyestablishedintellige
