2、hefollowingfourcategories:1：thelimitequilib-riumincludingthetraditionalslicesmethod,2：thecharacteristiclinemethod,3：Thelimitanalysismethodincludingupperandlowerboundapproaches,and4：thefiniteelementorfinitedifferencenumericaltechniques.Amongthem,theslicesmethodhasalmostdominatedthegeotechnicalprofe

3、ssionforestimatingthestabilityofsoilandrockslopes.Thisisduetothefactthattheslicesmethodisverysimple,cumulatedontheuseofthemethod,andthemethodisthemostknownandwidelyacceptedbypracticingengineers.Untilnow,alinearMCfailurecriterioniscommonlyusedinthelimitanalysisofstabilityproblems.Thereasonisproba

4、blythatalinearMCfailurecriterioncanbeexpressedascircles.Thischaracteristicmakesitpossibletoapproximatethecirclesbyafailuresurface,whichisalinearfunctionofthestressesinthestressspaceforplanestrainproblems.Thus,basedontheupperandlowerboundtheorems,formulationsofthestabilityorbearingcapacityproblem

5、sarelinearprogrammingproblems.However,experimentshaveshownthatthestrengthenvelopeofgeomaterialshasthenatureofnonlinearity~Hoek1983;Agaretal.1985;Santarelli1987!.Whenapplyinganupperboundtheoremtoestimatetheinfluencesofanonlinearfailurecriteriononbearingcapacityorstability,themainproblem,whichmanyr

6、esearchershaveencountered,ishowtocalculatetherateofworkdonebyexternalforcesandtherateofenergydissipationalongvelocitydiscontinuities.Suitablemethodsforsolvingthisproblemcanbemainlyclassifiedintotwotypes.Thefirsttypeofmethodisusingavariationalcalculustechnique.BakerandFrydman~1983!appliedthevariati
