2、uildingstructure.Fireeventsarederivedfromthehumanactivitieswithinbuildingsorfromthemalfunctionofmechanicalandelectricalequipmentprovidedwithinbuildingstoachieveaserviceableenvironment.Itisthereforepossibletodirectlyinfluencetherateoffirestartswithinbuildingsbychanginghumanbehavio

3、ur,improvedmaintenanceandimproveddesignofmechanicalandelectricalsystems.Furthermore,shouldafiredevelops,itispossibletodirectlyinfluencetheresultingfireseveritybytheincorporationoffiresafetysystemssuchassprinklersandtoprovidemeasureswithinthebuildingtoenablesaferegressfromthebuild

4、ing.Theabilitytoinfluencetherateoffirestartsandtheresultingfireseverityisuniquetotheconsiderationoffirewithinbuildingssinceotherloadssuchaswindandearthquakesaredirectlyafunctionofnature.Thepossibleapproachesfordesigningabuildingforfiresafetyarepresentedusinganexampleofamulti-stor

5、eybuildingconstructedoverarailwayline.Thedesignofboththetransferstructuresupportingthebuildingovertherailwayandthelevelsabovethetransferstructureareconsideredinthecontextofcurrentregulatoryrequirements.Theprinciplesandassumptionsassoci-atedwithvariousapproachesarediscussed.1INTRO

6、DUCTIONOtherpaperspresentedinthisseriesconsiderthedesignofbuildingsforgravityloads,windandearthquakes.Thedesignofbuildingsagainstsuchloadeffectsistoalargeextentcoveredbyengineeringbasedstandardsreferencedbythebuildingregulations.Thisisnotthecase,tonearlythesameextent,inthecaseoff

7、ire.Rather,itisbuildingregulationssuchastheBuildingCodeofAustralia(BCA)thatdirectlyspecifymostoftherequirementsforfiresafetyofbuildingswithreferencebeingmadetoStandardssuchasAS3600orAS4100formethodsfordeterminingthefireresistanceofstructuralelements.Thepurposeofthispaperistoconsi
