1、ThecharacteristicsofcohesionandcoherenceinBusinessEnglishIntroductionThisisastudyonthecohesionandcoherenceofBusinessEnglishtext.Thepresentthesisisanattempttoexplorethenatureofcohesion,textureandcoherence,andthewaystheyrelatetoeachotherintheproductionandcomprehensionofatext.In1960，R.Jac
2、obson’sontheparallelconstructioninliteraturediscourseisknownastheearlieststudyofdiscoursecohesion.In1962,HallidayandHasanputforwardtheconceptof“cohesion”anddividedcohesionintogrammaticalcohesionandlexicalcohesionforthefirsttimein1964.Fouryearslater,inthebookGrammaticalCohesioninSpokena
3、ndWrittenEnglish,fromwhereHasanstands,“thestudyofcohesionaimstodiscoverthecharacteristicsofatextasdistinctfromacollectionofsentences”(Hasan,1968)InthebookCohesioninEnglish(1976),theconceptofcohesionisdefinedas“asemanticone,itistherelationsofmeaningthatexistwithintexts,andthatdefineitas
4、atext.”Itisfurtherpointedoutthat“cohesionispartofthesystemofalanguage.”Sincethen,"cohesion"becomesanimportanttopicinthefieldoftextlinguistics.Lexicalcohesionisthecohesionthatarisesfromsemanticrelationshipsbetweenwords.Itis“thesinglemostimportantformofcohesivetie”whichholdsaboutfortyper
5、centofthetotal(Hoey,1991).Hoeyalsosaid,“Lexicalcohesionbecomesthedominantmodeofcreatingtexture.”Thereasonoftheaboveview,accordingthewriterofthethesis,isthatthelexicalcohesionistheonlytypeofcohesionwhichregularlyformsmultiplerelationships.Therefore,thisthesiswillfocusonlexicalcohesion.T
