2、sedthefuzzy-settheoryasthetheoreticbasisofvaguelanguage.Andthen,G.Lakoff,anAmericanlinguist,firstintroducedthedesignation“hedge”/“hedging”itselfinhisarticlein1972,“Hedges:AstudyinMeaningCriteriaandtheLogicofFuzzyConcepts”(Lakoff,1972).Undertheinfluenceofthem,moreandmorescholarsdom
3、anyresearchesforhedgesfromvariouspointsofview,suchasLakoff,Brown,Levinson,WuTieping,HeZiran,ZhangPing.Asamainwayinwhichpeoplegainvariousinformationindailylife,newsofferspeoplemanyuseful,significantandvaluableeventsallovertheworld.ThebasicrequirementsoflanguageusedinEnglishnewsareo
4、bjectivity,accuracy,andconcisenessandsoon.Therefore,mostpeoplethinkthathedgescannotbeusedinEnglishnewsbecauseoftheviolationofcharacteristicsofnews.Withthedeeplydevelopmentofcorrelated24researches,scholarsfindthatthereisnocontradictionbetweenthem.Onthecontrary,hedgesareabsolutelyne
5、cessaryforEnglishnewsinordertobeobjectiveandaccurate.ThispaperexploressomeimportantfunctionsandreasonsoftheapplicationofhedgesinEnglishnewstopromotethepracticaldevelopmentofthisdisciplinetheory.Thewholethesisisdividedintothreemainparts,excludingtheintroductionandconclusionparts.Th
6、eintroductionpartofthepaperistointroducethetheoreticsourceoffuzzylanguageonthewholeandthevitalpositionofhedgesinfuzzylanguage.Andthefirstpartmainlyanalyzesthetheoreticsourceofhedges,thedefinitionandcategorizationofhedges;thesecondpartpresentssomereasonsandessentialeffectsofhedgesw
