3、ndChineseakinshiptermsandthestrategiesfortranslatingkinshiptermssincekinshipterms,aspartoflanguage,areusuallyculturally-loaded.AndowingtothedeepinfluenceofChineseandEnglishcultures,translationofkinshipterms,especiallyfromChinesetoEnglish,isofgreatimportancetoculturaltransla
4、tion.Withabriefassessmentmadeonthetranslationofthekinshipterms,thepaperaimstorevealthesignificanceofapropertranslationofthekinshiptermsinbridgingthegapbetweenChinesecultureandEnglishculture.16ChapterTwoPREVIOUSSTUDIESONENGLISHANDCHINESEKINSHIPTERMSThewayweaddresspeopleisama
5、tterofgreatimportanceinmostcultures.Theaddressingtermsarethetermsusedtoshowtherelationshipsbetweenpeopleortodistinguishtheiridentity,socialstatusandcareer.Theappellationappliedinthefeudalsocietycandistinguishtheelderfromtheyounger,theworshippedfromthehumble,theintimatefromt
6、hedistantandthetruebornfromthebaseborn.Itcanmakeallthetiesamongallthepeoplewithbloodlinksclear-cutandsystematic.It’sanecessarymeanstomaintainthefeudalpatriarchalclansystemandthehierarchicalsystem.(Li)InLongmanDictionaryofcontemporaryEnglish,theaddressingtermsaredefinedas“Th
