2、ntsupportformulticulturalismisreflectedinretentionofethnicidentitiesinthemajorityofthepopulationinthefaceofbothacculturativesocialforcesandpubliclyexpressedpoliticalargumentsagainstmulticulturalism.Thedegreetowhichethnicidentityoridentitiesareretainedinyoungpeopleisexploredthroughsecondaryanalysi

3、sofdatagatheredonsome2,100Albertaadolescents,withanalysisofvariouskindsofsocialadjustmentthatmaybelinkedtoexpressedethnicoriginsorancestries.Nearlyhalfoftheadolescentsretainedasingleethnicallegiance,withtheremainderexpressingmultipleethnicidentities.Manynon-randompatternswerefoundintermsofassocia

4、tionofdeclaredethnicallegianceandvariablessuchashomelanguage;religiousaffiliationandobservance;scholasticachievement;sexualbehaviour;alcoholanddruguse;familystructure;andparentaleducation,familydiscord,andself-esteem.Threegroups(SouthAsian,Chinese,andSpanishandPortuguese)emergedashavingstrongfami

5、lysystems,conservativesocialhabitsandhighachievementaspirations.Correlationofvariablesacrossethnicgroupingsindicatedacoherentpattern,withstudentsofGerman,Polish,andItalianancestryformingagroup;DutchandUkrainian-ancestrystudentsanother;French,Scots,andIrish-ancestryafurthergroup;andScandinavianand
