1、FPIAFocusesonAdolescentsinAfricaByPatriciaMengechAstheworldfacesunprecedentedpopulationgrowth,Africaisconfrontedwithchallengesgreaterthananyotherregionoftheworld.Withrecordnumbersofadolescentsenteringthereproductiveyears,Africa'spopulationisprojectedtodoublewithinthenextthirtyyea
2、rswhilethenumberofwomenintheregionaged15-19isprojectedtoincreaseto62millionbytheyear2020(Africa'sPopulationChallenge,PopulationActionInternational).Atthesametime,Africannationsaretheleastequippedtoaddressthiscrisis—mostofthecontinent'sinhabitantsaredesperatelypooranditsnationsare
3、strugglingtoprovidethemostbasicservicestorapidlyexpandingpopulations.Continuedpopulationgrowthwillwipeoutthefewdevelopmentalgainsthathavesofarbeenmade.AdolescentsinAfricagivebirthto4.5millionchildreneveryyearandthisnumberissettoincreaseby23percentbytheyear2020asthenumberofadolesc
4、entsalsoincreases(TrendsinAdolescentFertilityandContraceptiveUseintheDevelopingWorld,USDepartmentofCommerce,BureauoftheCensus,1996).Despitetheperilsofearlypregnancy,adolescentsaremuchlesslikelytousecontraceptionthanolderpeople(TheHealthofYouth,BackgroundDocument,WorldHealthOrgani
5、zation,1989).AdolescentsinAfricaarenotreceivingthereproductivehealthinformationandservicestheyneedtoprotectthemselves.Thehighlevelofunmetneedforfamilyplanningamongadolescentsresultsinunwantedpregnancies—anestimated50percentormoreofadolescentbirthsinfiveAfricancountriesareunplanne
6、d(IntoaNewWorld:YoungWomen'sSexualandReproductiveLives,AlanGuttmacherInstitute,1998)—leadingmanyyoungwomentoseekabortions—themajorityofwhichareillegalandunsafe.FamilyPlanningInternationalAssistance®(FPIA)believesthatAfrica'shopeforthefuturedependsonimprovingtheaccessofadolescents
7、tosexualityeducationandqualityreproductivehealthservices,especiallycontraception.Tothisend,FPIA'sAfricaRegionalOfficecurrentlyimplementsseveralprojectsthatfocusonadolescents.Alltheseprojectstrytoinvolveyoungpeopleinthedesignandevaluationoftheproject,incorporatingspecialstrategies
