2、i]Atthattime,the“endofart”thesisoredramaticallycharacterizedas“thedeathofart.”ThisunderstandingofHegelainlyonamistranslationofkeytermsinHegel’saestheticsinanEnglishtranslationdoneinthe1920sbytheEnglishscholarOsmatson.TheEnglishtranslationbySirT.M.Knox,ofHegel
3、’sLecturesinAestheticsin1975servedtocorrectsuchmisleadingtranslationsandsupportsthevie,andanexaminationoftheargumentsofscholars(BenedettoCroceandEricHeller)etimesmisleadingstatements,Hegeldidnotintendtheendofartinthesensethatthisideaentsoutofcontextitple,tosa
4、ythatHegelbelievedthatarthadetoanendinhistimeorthatitspurposeasameansofrevealingthetruthhadbeensupplantedbyreligionandphilosophy.But,asSirMalKnoxpointedout,,Hegelalso“saidthatarteIdidnotcarryonthisdiscussionodernandcontemporaryart.YetitseemedcleartomethatHege
5、l’sanalysisopeneduptheentspertainingtothedebatesovertheendofartthathavesubsequentlytranspired.MyinterpretationofHegelandtheendofartisbasedonthefolloents:1.TheclaimthatHegel’smetaphysicaldialecticalprinciplenecessarilyproducesthedeathofartisshoisapplicationoft
6、heprincipleofthedialectic.IfoneregardsdialecticasthekeyelementinHegel’sunderstandingoftheevolutionofculture,thesystemremainsopentothepossibilityofunendingchange.2.Arevieostlikelytosupporttheendofartthesisestablishessufficientqualificationsineverycasetosupport
