3、nglishtranslationbySirT.M.Knox,ofHegel’sLecturesinAestheticsin1975servedtocorrectsuchmisleadingtranslationsandsupportstheviewthatHegel’sdidnotportendthedeathofart.BasedonacarefulinvestigationofHegel’stextsrelatingtothisproblem,andanexaminationoftheargumentsofscholars(BenedettoCroceandEricH

4、eller)whoadvancedthedeathofartthesis,Iconcludedthat,despitecomplexandsometimesmisleadingstatements,Hegeldidnotintendtheendofartinthesensethatthisideawaspopularlyunderstood.BytakingcertainisolatedstatementsoutofcontextitwouldbepossibletoarguethatHegeldidintendthedeathofart,forexample,whenhe

5、orhiseditorscitepassagesthatseemtosaythatHegelbelievedthatarthadcometoanendinhistimeorthatitspurposeasameansofrevealingthetruthhadbeensupplantedbyreligionandphilosophy.But,asSirMalcomKnoxpointedout,,Hegelalso“saidthatartwouldcontinueitstaskforthousandsofyears…”[ii]AtthetimeIdidnotcarryonth
