4、eans“different”,and“patria”means“homeland”).Allopatricspeciationmaybethemainspeciationroute.Thisshouldnotbesurprising,sinceallopatryisprettycommon.Ingeneral,thesubpopulationsofmostspeciesareseparatedfromeachotherbysomemeasurabledistance.Soevenundernormalsituationsthegeneflowamongth

5、esubpopulationsismoreofanintermittenttricklethanasteadystream.Inaddition,barrierscanrapidlyariseandshutoffthetrickle.Forexample,inthe1800samonstrousearthquakechangedthecourseoftheMississippiRiver,alargeriverflowinginthecentralpartoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Thechangeseparatedpopulat

6、ionsofinsectsnowlivingalongoppositeshore,completelycuttingoffgeneflowbetweenthem.Geographicisolationalsocanproceedslowly,overgreatspansoftime.Wefindevidenceofsuchextendedeventsinthefossilrecord,whichaffordsglimpsesintothebreakupofformerlycontinuousenvironments.Forexample,duringpast
