2、dditionalstates.Itthusappearsthatweareonthefrontendofacovenantmarriage’’boom”thatcouldsoonsweepacrossthenation.Hereweconsiderjustwhatcovenantmarriageisandwhyitisaconceptwhosetimeappearstohavecome.Wealsotakeupandrespondtothemostcommonobjectionsorreservationsthatpeoplehaveexpressedab

3、outit.Whatis"CovenantMarriage?"CoupleswishingtomarryinLouisianaarenowrequiredtochoosebetweentwomarriageregimes:thestandardmarriagewithvirtuallyunrestrictedaccesstono-faultdivorceoracovenantmarriagedesignedtobesomewhatharderbothtoenterandtoexit.Thecovenantoptionspecificallyacknowled

4、gesthatmarriageisalifelongcommitmentanddiffersfromconventionalMarriageinanumberofadditionalways:Covenantmarriagerequirespremaritalcounseling.Counselingmustincludediscussionsoftheseriousnessofmarriage,thelifelongcommitmentbeingmadebythecoupletotheirmarriage，theobligationtoseekmarita

5、lcounselingifproblemsariselaterinthemarriage,andtheexclusivegroundsfordivorceorlegalseparationinacovenantmarriage.Couplesmustsignanaffidavitacknowledgingtheircommitmentandprovethattheyhavereceivedcounselingontheseissues.Likewise,divorcefromacovenantmarriagerequiresthecoupletohaveso

6、ughtmarriagecounselingandtohavemadeagood-faithefforttoresolvetheirdifferences.Althoughano-faultdivorceisstillpossibleforcovenantmarriages，thenewlawrequiresthatthecoupleliveseparateandapartfortwoyears(vs.sixmonthsunderthecurrentmarriageregime)orbelegallyseparatedforeighteenmonths.Di
