3、madethroughmodalitycanalsoberealizedbyaclausebesidesmodalverbandmodaladjunct.Halliday(2000:354)referstothiskindofdeviceemployedinmodalityasthemetaphorofmodality,whichisbasedonthesemanticrelationshipofprojection.Hepointsoutthatthespeaker’sopinionregardingtheprobabilityiscodednotasamodalelement

4、withintheclausebutasaseparate,projectingclauseinahypotacticclausecomplex.Atthesametime,Hallidaysuggeststhatthebasicdistinctionthatdetermineshoweachtypeofmodalitywillberealizedistheorientation,i.e.“thedistinctionbetweensubjectiveandobjectivemodalityandbetweentheexplicitandimplicitvariants”(ibi

5、d:357).Thompson(2000:60)namestheorientationofmodalityasmodalresponsibilityaccordingtohowfarthespeakeracceptsresponsibilityfortheattitudebeingexpressed.Intheinteraction,ifthespeakerwantstoexpresshisorherpersonaljudgmentorinclinationmoreexplicitly,themoresubjectiveorientationisindicated,e.g.“It

6、hinkMaryisill”.Butinsomecases,thespeakermightintendtoconcealhisorherpersonalviewpointorassessment,andthusthemoreobjectiveorientationisindicated,e.g.“It’squiteprobablethatMaryisill”.Therearefourtypesofmodalorientation:explicitsubjective,explicitobjective,implicitsubjectiveandimplicitobjective,
